Overview:
The RYA Powerboat Level 1: Introduction to powerboating course is a practical introduction to boat handling and safety on powerboats. The course covers techniques for launching and recovering a boat from a boat trailer, everyday boat handling and the use of safety equipment.
These RYA courses can be covered in a variety of boat types, both planing and displacement vessels. Any certificate issued will be endorsed with the type of boat in which training and assessment took place.
Seagrass Marine run this course in Oban on our vessel Seagrass Pogsea, a fully coded 6 metre Humber Destroyer Rigid Hulled Inflatable Boat (RHIB), however we can also offer own boat tuition if you have a suitable and insured boat – please contact us to discuss your requirements.
Who is this course for?
People with limited/no experience who wish to gain some basic powerboating skills
Ideal for Kids 8+
Most adult beginners are more suited to the Level 2 Course

The RYA Powerboat Level 2: provides the skills and background knowledge needed by the competent powerboat driver. The course is the basis for the international certificate of competence.
It aims to teach boat handling and seamanship in powerboats.
The course focuses on low speed, close quarters manoeuvres as well as man overboard recovery procedures, it also introduces driving at planing speed and collision regulations.

The RYA Intermediate Powerboat: Covers the practical use of pilotage and passage planning by day on coastal waters using both traditional and electronic navigational techniques.
It aims to teach the standard required to complete a short coastal passage by day.
This course builds on the foundation knowledge of the Level 2 course training and is suited to those who aim to drive larger more powerful powerboats.
During the course you will cover cruising at planing speed and more advanced boat handling.
It is recommended for anyone considering moving on to the Advanced course. The course can be conducted on a planing or displacement boat.

· A valid First Aid certificate
· RYA Marine Radio SRC Operators Certificate
· Day Skipper Theory (or equivalent experience)

Overview:
The RYA Advanced Powerboat Course: Aims to teach boat handling, seamanship, pilotage and navigation up to the standards required to drive a planing powerboat safely by day and night in tidal coastal waters, with which the candidate may be familiar, in more demanding conditions. Given the nature of these passages Advanced Powerboat courses should be delivered on powerboats of a minimum of 6 metres and an engine size sufficient to enable coastal passages at planing speed.

Experience required:
Candidates should be competent to the standard of Intermediate Powerboat Certificate with a thorough knowledge of navigation and chartwork to the level of Costal Skipper/Yachtmaster Shorebased Certificate
It is recommended that candidates have the following qualifications and experience BEFORE taking this course:
· A valid First Aid certificate
· RYA Marine Radio SRC Operators Certificate
· Costal Skipper/Yachtmaster Shorebased Certificate (or equivalent experience)

Overview:
The RYA Advanced Powerboat Exam: Aims to enable you to achieve a Certificate of Competence awarded by the RYA/MCA on successful completion of an exam.
The successful completion of exam is required if you want to commercially endorse an RYA/MCA Powerboat Advanced Certificate of Competence. The only exception to this is if you were awarded a course completion certificate prior to 1 January 2005, in which case you may obtain a commercial endorsement without having to pass the exam.
The exam is conducted by an external examiner, this can be arranged through Seagrass Marine but should be paid for directly through RYA, the current fee (2024) is £209 per participant.
Seagrass Marine can provide our vessel Seagrass Pogsea, a fully coded 6 metre Humber Destroyer Rigid Hulled Inflatable Boat (RHIB) for you to use for your exam, however you can also use any suitable and insured boat.
Please note, candidates should be familiar with all the equipment on board the vessel, as you may be asked to use this during the examination and it is recommended that you have completed the Advanced - Certificate of Competence on the boat you wish to complete your Exam on.
